Collecting Louisiana Sales Taxes

from:

In order to know whether a merchant needs to collect Louisiana sales taxes, he should take the time to read either online or in hard copy the requirements and exemptions for assessment of Louisiana sales taxes. One of the biggest questions that one may ask is how Louisiana sales taxes apply to Internet sales. In short, it is applied in the same way as catalog sales—if the merchant has a physical presence in Louisiana or delivers physically to Louisiana with their own trucks, the purchase is subject to Louisiana sales taxes. Of course, you expect the merchant to collect the sales tax, but if he doesn't, the buyer is liable to report the purchase and applicable sales tax. If you fail to do so, and the state of Louisiana finds out about your purchase, they have the right to bill you or the seller for the purchase.

At the present time, Louisiana sales taxes are assessed at four per cent with cities and municipalities having the option to assess their own taxes aw well. For the new merchant, do not even attempt to determine what you should tax because Louisiana has a number of exemptions. You are better either keeping a list of exemptions handy or incorporating a tax programs that will make that determination for you with each sale. Programs such as Vertex are programmed to do just that, and they are based upon the information that is programmed concerning each state. Once you enter a sale in a given area, based upon the zip code, the program will determine if the purchase is taxable or non-taxable and charge the customer accordingly.

If you aren't using a computer for all of your sales, you may want to enlist the help of your accountant to determine when to apply Louisiana sales taxes. By engaging the aid of your accountant, you don't have to concern yourself with that aspect of your business, and you know that you are applying the rate to the right group of products or services in accordance with Louisiana tax laws. Getting it right the first time is much easier than trying to catch up on it later when you may have to pay penalties and interest on top of Louisiana sales taxes. Keep in mind that it is far simpler to do it right the first time than to have to backtrack later. Before you make the first sale, you need to make sure you have all the information you need about Louisiana sales taxes in order to assure that you are collecting taxes only when necessary.
